In the World of Museums, and thanks to
utopia-dweller for including it in this stroll through the world's major art museums ..
the painting being studied is called
'L'Origine du Monde' (The Origin of the World), and the model for it was Jo Hiffernan, who was also the model for Whistler's earlier work called 'Symphony in White'.
'L'Origine du Monde' was intended as a somewhat brutal message from Courbet to Whistler, that not only was she Courbet's model now, he'd also just fucked her.
